Orientalism and glamourizing voilence

The Abused Goddesses of India is an advertisements created by Mumbai-based ad firm Taproot India. Even though the image is against domestic violence, it was largely critisised because it glamourises violence. The woman’s face is heavily decked up with makeup and she is expressionless. The only sign of violence present are the scars on her face.

The image also puts across the idea that Indian Women are particularly oppressed and need to be saved. This ad did extremely well in the US as it portrays the idea of the oppressed and abused ‘Other’
